Thursday Night at the Taiwan Cafe
Since about June I've been eating about one night per month at the Taiwan Cafe, located at 34 Oxford Street in Boston's Chinatown. A couple of the guys I home teach for Church suggested I home teach them by having dinner with them. Last night was a somewhat typical night. We got together about 7 pm. The group was all men - - one PWC auditor, a former law school classmate of mine at BYU who is from Beijing and now works for the city of Boston, a PhD candidate at MIT, and a PhD candidate at Boston University, and then me. After dinner, one of the PhD guys stayed downtown to meet his date and see the 12 am premier of the new Harry Potter movie. Everyone else piled into my car for rides home. On the way home the MIT guy mentioned a prank that MIT students had pulled on one of the bridges over the Charles river. If you have not heard of the famous "hacks" MIT students engage in, you are in for a treat - - when you have a moment peruse hacks.mit.edu/Hacks/Gallery.html. My favorite hack occurred during a Harvard - Yale football game (I recall reading about it back when it happened): "The members of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity set up a large weather balloon that rose from the turf near the 46-yard line during a break following a touchdown in the first quarter. The balloon, which had "MIT" written all over it, inflated to six feet in diameter before bursting." (See www-tech.mit.edu/V110/N52/hack.52n.html).
